Hungary Stamps Identification and Value Guide

The first stamps of Hungary were issued in 1871. The Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 had established the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary and restored certain sovereignties to the Kingdom of Hungary, including authority over the post.

The stamp series of 1871 and 1871-1872 featured a portrait of Franz Joseph I but did not identify the issuing postal authority. Subsequent Hungarian stamps are either inscribed Magyar Posta (Hungarian Post) or Magyar Kir Posta (Hungarian Royal Post).

It is particularly difficult to distinguish between the 1898 and 1899 series. The type 2 and type 3 watermarks (Crown in Oval and Crown in Circle respectively) are spread sideways across six individual stamps. Therefore any single stamp will only show a portion of the complete watermark. On some specimens it may not be possible to observe with certainty the subtle differences between the two types. The crown in circle type also has a Roman numeral IV that appears four times in an entire sheet, therefore any portion of a Roman numeral indicates the 1899 series.

Note that the two series can also be distinguished by paper. Stamps from 1898 were printed on medium, white paper. Stamp from 1899 were printed on thinner, yellowish paper.
