In 1900, Reichspost issued a new design for definitive stamps depicting Germania an iconic figure representing the personification of the German nation. The Germania issues would go on to become Germany's longest running stamp series, spanning two decades and producing hundreds of collectibe varieties. The first issues are easily distinguished from later stamps by the inscription of REICHSPOST rather than DEUTSCHES REICH. For a full introduction see Overview of the Germania Series.

There are two distinct versions of the 2 mark stamp - listed here as Type 20 and Type 23. The original version of the stamp had the inscription lettered in a gothic script that was different from the style used in on other stamps of the issue. After a short period, the government reissued the stamp with block lettering among other design changes. On examination there are numerous design differences that collectors can use to distinguish the two versions. In addition to the lettering on the inscription, collectors commonly note the original's clear, sharp lines in the sun's rays.
